Shape of Cell

Variation in Shape of Cells:

Cells exist in different varieties of shapes. They can be disc-shaped, polygonal, rectangular, branched, or irregular. The shape of a cell depends on the specific function it performs. Cells are mostly round, spherical or elongated in shape. Cells sometimes are quite long.

Some cells have fixed shape like most plants and animal cells, while some cells like WBC and amoeba keep changing their shapes. Fixed shaped cells may be of various types like elliptical like fat cells, spherical like ovum, spindle shaped like  smooth muscle cell, knobbed thread like sperm, discoidal like RBC, elongated like nerve cells.

  • Oval, round or spherical shaped: Human RBC, Ovum.
  • Spindle shaped (long and pointed at both ends): Muscle cell.
  • Branched and elongated: Nerve Cells.
  • Kidney Shaped: Guard Cells in leaves.
  • Some cells keep on changing their shape like amoeba. These type of cells are called as irregularly shaped cells.
